Players from the UK, heading to the Algarve and the region’s renowned fairways over the coming months, are guaranteed a very enthusiastic reception. During what is always one of the best times of year for golf, courses are also in optimum condition for players to enjoy.
Playing golf in the Algarve has never been safer, with all clubs meticulously following the strict health guidelines. The ‘safe’ standard of courses, hotels and tourist businesses is officially reflected in the ‘Clean and Safe’ accreditation status awarded by the Portuguese authorities. Similarly, Portugal generally is approved as a ‘Safe Travels’ destination by the World Travel Tourism Council.
The Portuguese golfing hotspot, boasts over 40 fabulous courses, and has been a firm favourite with golfers across the UK, for over five decades. In what is a reflection of the region’s enviable global status, it has been voted the world’s favourite golf destination 2020 by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO).
A clearly delighted spokesperson for Algarve Tourism has echoed the ‘welcome back’ message for golfers: “Everyone has worked extremely hard to make Portugal and the Algarve one of the safest places to visit in Europe, and we’re thrilled to be able to welcome UK golfers back after so many months away. While some things in the world may have changed after the Covid-19 lockdown, we can reassure golfers that our courses remain as good as ever and our message is clear – put months of lockdown and quarantine behind you, and enjoy some of Europe’s top-ranked courses in a part of the world that is a golfing paradise.”
Undoubtedly, Algarve tourism has been hit hard by the effects of the pandemic. However, equally apparent has been the region’s fierce determination to face the inevitable challenges, and ensure that it continues to be a safe environment for visitors, including golfers. With the fairways and greens in pristine condition, the traditional delights of the beautiful Algarve now await UK visitors returning to one of the world’s premium golfing locations.
