An unusual form of physical training is beginning to catch the attention of Algarve residents

In the heart of Lagos, a centre dedicated to an unusual form of physical training is beginning to catch the attention of Algarve residents.
OsteoStrong Lagos, the first facility of its kind in the region, is part of an international network of over 220 centres focused on “bone and foundational strength”.
Whilst the concept may seem unconventional, it is steadily drawing interest from a growing number of people – particularly golfers and health enthusiasts – who are looking for something beyond traditional fitness models.

Unlike a gym or a physiotherapy practice, the emphasis here is not on building muscle, but on strengthening the skeletal system itself.
“Muscles are important, but it’s the bones that support everything we do,” says Tiago Losa Faria, founder of the Lagos centre.

The method, known as “Osteogenic Loading”, is backed by more than 25,000 clinical studies and is grounded in a scientific approach that involves applying safe, brief, but intense loads to the bones using specialised equipment.
Each session is around 10 minutes and always supervised by certified coaches. Whilst this may sound minimal, this precise loading of the skeletal system can help increase bone density, muscular strength, balance, flexibility, and posture, as well as a dramatic reduction in joint and back pain.

“By working directly on bone density and structural strength, we’re able to deliver results that most people thought were impossible – especially in just 10 minutes a week,” Tiago explains.
In a region famous for its golf courses and active lifestyle, the benefits are particularly compelling for the Algarve’s passionate golfing community. “Golf is a sport of precision, power, and longevity,” says Tiago.

“OsteoStrong gives golfers a unique advantage: greater stability, explosive strength, and the confidence to play more often and with fewer injuries.”
Clinical results show balance can improve significantly after just a few sessions – an aspect that has caught the attention of those looking to maintain consistency and control in their swing.
Many golfers report feeling more “anchored” and in control after only a few sessions, with noticeable gains in swing power and endurance within two months. Over time, these improvements accumulate, leading to lasting changes in posture and performance.

That said, this method is not exclusively for athletes. For those looking to preserve and improve their skeletal health in the long run, the techniques employed can help prevent osteoporosis, recover from injury, and maintain mobility with age.
Everything begins with what is referred to as a “Discovery Visit”, where newcomers can experience the equipment and method first-hand.

The setting is private, sessions are booked by appointment, and the experience is deliberately calm, with each visitor receiving one-on-one attention from a coach in a low-stress environment that avoids the usual distractions of conventional gym.
“We want every person to feel valued, safe, and inspired to reach their best – not just physically, but in overall wellbeing,” adds Tiago.
The concept has also found support among professional athletes worldwide. Kyle Berkshire, a three-time World Long Drive Champion, has credits OsteoStrong as a key part of his training and recovery.
“It’s a game-changer for anyone serious about performance, longevity, and injury prevention. It’s a cornerstone of my routine, whether I’m preparing for a championship or just staying at my physical best.”
