The Portuguese Golf Federation (FPG) was recently awarded the Medal of Sporting Merit by the Secretary of State for Sport, Pedro Dias, a milestone celebrated on October 20th.

Marking its 75th anniversary, the FPG was recognised for its “impact and contributions to the development of golf in Portugal”.

The award ceremony took place during a dinner at the Estoril Golf Club and symbolizes a tribute to the Portuguese Golf Federation for its commitment to the development of golf in Portugal, and particularly its dedication to promoting values of fair play, inclusion, sustainability, and respect for the environment.

This award recognises “organisations and individuals” who, “through notable and consistent efforts, contribute to the advancement and promotion of sport in Portugal”.

“It is an honour for the Portuguese Golf Federation and national golf to receive this award and recognition from the Government of Portugal,” said FPG President Miguel Franco de Sousa, noting that “this recognition belongs to many who have dedicated their time to the institution.” He added: “Over these 75 years, FPG has worked to achieve excellent results, to elevate the country on the international stage, and always to champion a sport founded on deeply rooted values and principles.”

Pedro Dias, Secretary of State for Sport, also highlighted that this award is “an important recognition by the Portuguese State of a federation responsible for promoting, developing, managing, and organising golf in Portugal – something the FPG has achieved positively over the past 75 years.”

“It is very important to recognise merit and cultivate a culture of meritocracy in Portuguese sport,” stated Pedro Dias.
