On the 10th of June Portugal celebrates the annual national holiday, Portugal Day (Dia de Portugal) and the Algarve’s Quinta do Lago Golf Club traditionally joins in the day of celebration while raising funds for local, worthy causes. The day commemorates the death, on the 10th of June, 1580, of Luís de Camões, one of the most revered figures in the Portuguese history.
Camões is best known for his creative work, ‘Lusíadas’, the epic poem that celebrates Portugal’s successes and rich history. However, he was also a legendary adventurer, with escapades include surviving a shipwreck in the region now known as Vietnam, and also losing an eye while battling for his country. Patriotism and bravery are just some of Luís de Camões’ qualities which have elevated him to the status of national hero, and marked by the celebration of Portugal Day in his honour. Quinta do Lago Golf is again set for the big day and this year’s beneficiaries are the Social and Cultural Association of Almancil. The golf competition is open to non-members as well as members, with entry fees of €75 for guests and €45 for members. The club aims to donate €25 of member’s entry and €55 of guest entries to this worthwhile charity. Quinta do Lago also welcomes donations for, such as, the Tombola, and any prizes may be left at the resort office prior to the event. Full details of what is traditionally a great day of golf, celebration and a successful charity drive will be released shortly.
