Alfie Fox will compete against some of golf’s top juniors following victory in the 2016 Paul McGinley Junior Cup at Quinta do Lago. Fox, 17, is a member at Club de Golf Quinta do Lago and Roehampton near London scored 74 and 73 on Quinta do Lago’s Laranjal course – six clear of Portugal’s Sara Gouveia for the overall gross title. European Ryder Cup-winning captain Paul McGinley presented the trophy and Fox now qualifies for a place in this year’s elite Daily Telegraph BMW Junior Golf Championship held at Quinta do Lago this autumn and previous participants include Rio 2016 Olympic gold medal winner Justin Rose. The 36-hole Paul McGinley Cup for boys and girls up to the age of 18 awards prizes in four handicap categories and another high-class field from all over Europe competed this year including McGinley’s children Killian and Niamh with the former finishing runner-up in the Category One nett competition while Niamh secured the same placing in the Category Three nett division. In Category Two Manuel Martins beat brother David to claim the best gross title while Gustavo Monteiro claimed top nett score. In Category Three Raoul van der Hemme secured top honours ahead of Leonor Francisco Duarte and in Category Four for children under-12 Frankie Wallace beat Martin Ribeiro for first prize and João Pedro Crasi Alves returned the best nett score. Stars of the future were undoubtedly on show and there is the promise of another memorable occasion for players and spectators at Quinta do Lago in the autumn.
