With smart clubs, specialised apps, and more, Artificial Intelligence is revolutionising the world of golf

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is elevating the game of golf to a whole new level. Innovative technologies, gadgets, and equipment are being developed to better analyse your swing, enhance accuracy, and provide real-time feedback both on and off the course.

To better understand what already exists in Portugal and what to anticipate in the coming years, we explore the new trends taking over the fairways.

“AI will or is already strongly influencing the industry,” according to Pedro Nunes Pedro, President of the Portuguese Golf Federation.

“Through technology, we will be able to analyse the performance of players in detail, create specific training programmes for each athlete, monitor all the data, and react in record time.”

Indeed, the evolution of golf equipment is accelerating with the introduction of new technologies, such as AI-powered smart clubs and grips, golf balls designed for maximum aerodynamics, and personalised clubs, which were once considered a luxury, becoming mainstream.

Advanced golf equipment now features integrated sensors and AI to provide golfers with real-time, data-driven feedback on grip pressure, swing mechanics, and club angle during each shot.

This data is analysed by AI algorithms, which interpret complex patterns to identify issues with grip, swing path, and overall technique.

Golfers then receive instant, coach-like feedback through connected apps, helping them make adjustments during practice and play, and encouraging consistent performance across all skill levels.

By understanding and correcting swing dynamics, golfers can develop better habits, achieve more consistent swings, and enhance their overall performance. Proper grip pressure and steady swing paths are essential for preventing injuries, and AI-powered clubs assist golfers in maintaining these vital elements.

Each stroke becomes a data-driven learning opportunity, enabling golfers to monitor progress, identify weaknesses, and tailor their training to specific areas.

On the course, AI-driven insights and interactive course mapping are also assisting players in further refining their skills with greater accuracy than ever before.

AI data can even help you decide which club is more likely to deliver a successful shot, using metrics like course conditions and past performance.

Although AI-powered smart clubs are not yet available in Portugal, they can be found online, such as the G-Grip, the world’s first AI-powered intelligent golf club, which features IoT sensors to measure grip pressure and swing dynamics in real-time for instant feedback.

There is also the Callaway Paradym AI Smoke Collection, a line of clubs designed using real-life player data and AI analysis to create an “AI Smart Face” that offers improved forgiveness and distance.

Meanwhile, Arccos has developed a set of Smart Sensors, a system that uses sensors in each club and an AI-powered app to provide comprehensive game tracking, smart club distances, and personalised AI caddie advice.

Off the course, Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) are transforming traditional golf simulators.

Advanced simulators with a large screen and AI data are used to create simulation environments that replicate real-world courses, offering an immersive experience for training and perfecting techniques.

In Portugal, several advanced golf facilities utilise the TrackMan radar system to customise clubs for each player, such as Nevada Bob’s Club Fitting Studios, in the Algarve and Lisbon.

Whether you are an experienced player refining your swing or a beginner discovering what suits you best, this type of experience aims to provide clarity and help find the most suitable clubs for you.

After a thorough analysis, you receive a detailed report with personalised recommendations to help your final decision. Each club is carefully customised to your body and playing style, taking into account grip, shaft flex, loft, lie, and more.

Once your bespoke clubs are ready, you are invited to return for a follow-up session with a PGA professional to ensure a perfect fit and optimal performance, both on paper and on the course.

AI will also be used behind the scenes: “It will support sustainability by optimising [course] maintenance and improving the player experience with smarter course management,” explains Pedro Nunes Pedro, adding that it will help to reduce costs and improve the overall experience.

But AI technology does not stop there; it is also transforming how fans engage with the sport. “Spectator experiences will also evolve, with AI-based commentary,” says the FPG President, as it is now used to narrate golf rounds in real-time, as seen in the Masters app, and can generate live subtitles for videos.

It is even used to resolve tricky situations. Just recently, at the US Open, an AI avatar answered questions about golf rules, such as what to do when you encounter an alligator on the course.
