The Algarve has set a new record for the total of golf visitors and the number of rounds played. The region’s 42 courses hosted nearly 1.2 million rounds in 2015 – a rise of 7 per cent on 2014 and almost 8 per cent more than the previous best year of 2007. In total, 100,000 more rounds of golf were played last year in the Algarve and the statistics for the last few months of 2015 reveal a 15 per cent increase compared to the previous high of 2007. In October alone nearly 152,000 rounds were played and Maria Manuel Delgado e Silva, Algarve Tourist Association golf product manager, has every reason to be optimistic. “We are proud and delighted that so many people enjoyed the Algarve experience in 2015 and we are hoping many more will choose to visit us again in 2016.” As the Algarve celebrates its 50th anniversary as a golf destination this year there is great confidence that 2016 will set even more new records and continue the upward trend of golfers playing in this beautiful region of southern Portugal.
