Aroeira, one of Portugal’s most iconic golfing venues, is on target to regain its place at Europe’s top table as its significant upgrade nears completion. Under the guidance of ORIZONTE – Lisbon Golf, the 36-hole complex, host of the Portuguese Open in 1996 and 1997 has undergone an extensive improvement programme. Renovation began last summer and has continued since the spring. Having already improved the fairway and putting surfaces, renovated the cart paths and reconditioned the irrigation and pumping systems, head greenkeeper Dirk Hoeven has supervised a further refurbishment schedule over the last three months.
Aroeira I and II, created by Frank Pennick and Donald Steel, meander through tall, impressive pine trees. Between them, staged many other high-profile tournaments including several Ladies’ European Tour events and, in 2013, the prestigious European Men’s Club Trophy.
José Maria Cazal Ribeiro, from ORIZONTE – Lisbon Golf, said: “It has been a pleasure for us to restore a venue with such a rich golfing history. The investment programme undertaken over the last 18 months will lead to Aroeira becoming one of Portugal’s favourite destinations for golfers.”
Aroeira is part of the ORIZONTE – Lisbon Golf management group, which offers the chance to play some of the leading courses near Lisbon with great value for money on various accommodation options and golfers can now look forward to an even more memorable experience at Aroeira.
